Princess Ephigenia was born into the royal house of Ethiopia in the first century. There is a n apocryphal story about her which has catapulted her to sainthood after an interaction with the apostle Matthew.
After Matthew converted the royal family, including Ephigenia’s parents, King Egippus and Queen Candace, the princess decided she wanted to be consecrated as a virgin to God (the Christian one). So, she was living her best life, avoiding annoying men.
But, of course there was someone who wanted to marry her. The man named Hertacus became king, after the death of her father. Hertacus tried to convince Matthew that if he could get Ephigenia to marry him, Hertacus would give Matthew half of his kingdom.
In the legend, Hertacus gets so mad, he tries to burn Ephigenia’s house down, but Matthew wards off the flames, and the fire burns down Hertacus’s palace instead. Hertacus ends up with leprosy and dies.
Ephigenia’s brother becomes king, and she gets to live the rest of her life the way she wanted, like a single lady and man free. She was eventually venerated as a saint.
